Assessment Team in A meeting with Management and Senior Staff in Tripoli Central Hospital
Purpose
The purpose of the assessment team was to determine the needs of medical facilities in Tripoli and in the regions surrounding cities of Ġharyān and Yefren. Following the revolution, the level of security in Tripoli and the regional areas needed to be determined in order to provide accurate information for doctors, nurses and allied health care workers interested in volunteering their time to come and serve. The safety of staff placed in Libya is of paramount concern.
Current Situation
The Post-revolution healthcare system in Libya is beginning to start again, but pre-existing systemic problems are evident. The tertiary centres are functioning amidst significant challenges, whilst regional centres are struggling to provide even basic services. There is evidence that there has been significant underinvestment in rural hospitals and in primary healthcare centres throughout the country.
The assessment has been carried for 6 tertiary hospitals, 2 regional hospitals, 2 polyclinics, 2 village level primary healthcare centers, and 1 day centre for children with special needs. This assessment was carried out through honest and open discussions with senior medical staff, visits to almost all departments in every facility, observation of clinical care, a teaching session with medical students & residents in Gharyan, and direct participation in clinical care in Yefren hospital and polyclinic, including surgery.
